NOEMATICS was founded on Daniel Verney's initiative in 1995, under the name 'ERMEN', with an
initial goal of offering software solutions for the management of environmental
questions (an area where the founder had done extensive work, especially on
computer models of water resources). The objective was also to develop
intelligent software applied to database management, information search and
retrieval, and knowledge processing. Actually, this second objective soon
became prominent, and NOEMATICS designed a full text search engine, which was initially applied to a corpus of French and European legal environmental
issues.
The name "NOEMATICS" is built up from the ancient Greek word "noema" which means knowledge
and also object of knowledge, that which is known and thought. By this name the company emphasizes its dedication to the creation of software aiming at knowledge and meaning.
During the last years, NOEMATICS has developed software
applications for its clients (encyclopedias et dictionaries on CD-ROM, Web sites, Intranets) which include
its search engine or various parts of its search technology.
Meanwhile, NOEMATICS search engine was greatly enhanced and extended in new functionalities and capacities, and the company began its
business to business marketing throughout the English and French speaking world.
Noematics has a long term commitment to the goal of offering software tools which allow efficient retrieval of relevant information, and also the management of information by its contents:
this is what we mean by knowledge.
To fulfill this goal, NOEMATICS continues to develop its information management technology,
based on an alliance of Web/Intranet techniques with new and original solutions for representing information.

Daniel VERNEY
Founder Director, Research & Development
Daniel Verney started his computer software career when he was working in physics and
mathematics, building models and simulation software for hydrodynamics
phenomena, then for water resources management. He created geographical
information systems and databases in client-server architecture. Meanwhile, he
led research work on knowledge representation, information coding and the
algorithmics of intuitive operations. He applied his results to various software
projects, and developped a coding technology which is at the heart of the
NOEMATICS search engine.
Graduated from École Polytechnique (Paris), Daniel Verney worked as a
researcher in the area of fluids under high pressures, then he managed a
scientific computing department working on environmental problems. He worked for
several years in the United States and in Europe as a software consultant and
designer. He taught computer science as an associate professor at the University
of Reims (France). He participated for Polaroid Belgium in the development and
installation of the visitors access control system of the European Parliament.
In 1995, Daniel Verney founded ERMEN, renamed NOEMATICS in 2000, with a team
fully dedicated to the goal of providing software to help businesses and
individuals in finding relevant information and transforming it into
knowledge.
