Words to exclude

In the "exclusion" input box, enter keywords separated by spaces. Noematics REFLEXION will skip from the result list any document containing at least one of the "exclusion" keywords (actually, the Search Engine applies the boolean 'OR' operator to the list of excluded words).
This option is useful to refine the search when a too large number of results has been retrieved, which usually means that the query was too fuzzy.
The exclusion input box follows the same rules as the search keywords input box, but with the following limitations:
  • The "wild card" is not accepted.
  • Parentheses are not accepted (since the "OR" operator implicitly applies to the exclusion input zone).
  • The "exact phrase" option does not apply to the excluded words input box.

Exact phrase and distance

This option allows to specify a search by exact phrase or matching a condition of maximum distance, in number of words, between the first and the last of the search words.

  • No distance (default): order of keywords and distance between them do not have any relevance in the request.
  • Exact phrase: all entered keywords are considered by the search engine as forming a phrase or expression. REFLEXION will retrieve all documents containing exactly that phrase.
  • Distance between words: you must select a value greater than 1. REFLEXION will apply to the list of results the following filter: keep any document where there is at least one occurrence of the first and last keywords separated by at most N words

When the "Exact phrase" option is enabled:

  • REFLEXION does not take into account the various grammatical forms of each keyword, but only the exact word as entered by the user.
  • this option applies only to the search keywords, not to the "exclusion" keywords.
  • wild cards cannot be used.

The "Exact phrase" option may also be enabled by enclosing the search phrase between double quotes "...".

When the "Distance between words" option is enabled:

  • wild cards cannot be used.
  • it retrieves documents which are most likely to deal with the theme or subject represented by the first and the last keywords.

The grammatical forms ("inflections"")

The expression "Inflected forms" refers to the set of gammatical forms of a given word in a given language: masculine/feminine, singular/plural, and verbs forms.
  • "Grammatical forms"; option enabled (default): the search engine retrieves all documents in each langiuage, which each contain any of the grammatical forms of the keywords. For example, il you entered the mord 'ox', the search engine will retrieve any english document containing one (or several) of the words 'ox', 'oxen'. If the search is bilingual, it will also possibly retrieve non english documents containing 'ox' (but not 'oxen' - which is not a grammatical form in other languages).

  • "Inflected forms" option disabled: the search engine only retrieves documents containing exactly the keywords, in the spelling entered by the user.

The current "Grammatical forms" option autmatically applies to the excluded words.
The "Grammatical forms" option becomes inactive when the "Exact phrase" option is enabled.
If you use a wild card, you must enable the "Grammatical forms" option.

Wild cards

Noematics REFLEXION accepts the '*' wild card at the end of a word. By example, if you type the word "doctor*", the search engine will extend your query to extra words "doctoral" and "doctorate": all the results returned contain at least one of these words "doctor", "doctoral" or "doctorate".
  • Wild cards cannot be used with characters "%" or "?".
  • Wild cards are not allowed at the beginning nor in the middle of a word.
  • Wild cards can both be used in searched terms and in exclusion terms.
  • Using wild cards requires the inflected forms to be enabled (default value).
  • Using wild cards is not allowed if the distance option is set on "Exact phrase" or "Distance between words" option.
  • Wild cards are usefull to do a query on a group of words having the same "root".

If you need to use wild cards, be aware that it can result in longer response time.
This is why in some cases REFLEXION may ask you to refine your query because of a too large number of words matching with the wild card.

When using wildcards, it automatically includes the "inflected forms", but generally results in a larger number of responses. In many cases, you might get better results with the "grammatical forms" option than with wild cards.

Filter by languages

  • The "Languages" pop-up menu allows you to choose the languages your request will be performed on. The "All languages" option is the default one.
  • If you select one language - English or French - Noematics REFLEXION analyzes your request in the selected language and searches only over the documents pertaining to that language.
  • With the "All languages" option the Search Engine analyzes your request in each of the available languages and searches through all indexed documents. (the language of each document is automatically detected by Noematics REFLEXION during the indexing phase).
  • Please don't forget that some words may be present in the two langages with different meanings (for example : chat which in French means cat). Moreover, each language dictionary contains many words coming from other languages.
